Another Missed Opportunity
The fourth space tourist took flight on Sept 9, 2006, and the US media missed the ride. On Monday the fourth private citizen flew to space. Anousheh Ansari, an Iranian born American entrepreneur, flew aboard a Soyuz spaceship as the first woman to engage in the commercial aspect of space travel, and the first Iranian in space. Yet the US media talked about the Iranian President at the UN. Secondly, the US government failed to prominently display Anousheh’s accomplishments as a product of the freedoms we enjoy here. Those freedoms are not available to any woman in Iran, or any other country controlled by his ilk. This would have been the perfect thing to stick in their faces. You want to see what happens when everybody is free?

Thirdly, the US still fails to come to it’s senses when it comes to commercializing space. Let’s face it we lost the race this time. The Russians continue to capitalize on their experience, and we are still piddling with the “Pinto of space travel”. And the media enables this continued attitude by not covering Anousheh, but focusing on the shuttle.
