No Time for Amnesia: We Must Fight!

By: BloodBoughtPatriot

With the 5 year anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks upon us, one does not have to look very far to find reminders of the events of that tragic and dark day in America’s history. Indeed from movies such as United 93 and the more recent release World Trade Center, to programs on the History Channel recounting the days events, it is hard not be reminded of what happened on that day, both good and bad, and have what unfolded ingrained in the forefront of one’s mind; and I believe rightly so.

Nonetheless, given the outcry over everything from the war in Iraq to the NSA wiretapping program designed to help us hunt out terrorists and prevent further attacks, to even racial profiling, I cannot help but think that sadly, many in the country are suffering from selective amnesia; they are in need of a cold dose of reality followed by a history lesson. And the dose of reality is this: contrary to the popular, politically-correct belief that everyone is essentially good, but rather does wrong because they are a victim of some bad wrong or circumstance, absolute evil exists in the world. Indeed, this more than anything else was the quintessential lesson of September 11th: there are people out there who want to kill us and no amount of tolerance or “enlightened” thinking is going to change that or make it go away. Unfortunately, with all the criticism over the President and his policies on the Left, I believe we have lost sight of that important lesson, and that puts us in a perilous position.

Furthermore, not only does absolute evil exist, but history shows us that where you ignore that fact or try to appease it through negotiation, in the end you end up only encouraging and facilitating the triumph of evil. If you don’t believe me, open your eyes and look at the historical record of the 20th century: In the late 30’s, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, seeking to avoid a crisis, gave into Adolf Hitler and ceded the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia to him via a signed agreement. Afterwards, he came back declaring “peace in our time.” Thus, evil was satisfied: just give it what it wants and it will back off, right?

Wrong! The truth was that, being the evil man he was, Hitler had no intention of honoring the agreement or of stopping with just one piece of Czechoslovakia. Consequently, in March of 1939, Germany occupied the rest of Czechoslovakia and paved the way for its domination of Europe and the world; had it not been for men like Churchill and Roosevelt and their decision to fight, who knows what language would be spoken in many parts of the world today-maybe German, maybe Japanese.

And it does not stop there. In the aftermath of WWII, we had the Cold War between the USA and the Soviet Union; coming off of WWII, one would have thought we would have learned how to fight evil and applied it to this new rising threat. But no, for 35 years, from the war’s end in 1945 to 1980, one leader after another sought to coddle the Soviets and try to negotiate with them. The result, far from a promised peace, was one broken treaty after another and an ascending Soviet threat. It was only when Ronald Wilson Reagan came to power in 1981 and committed to fighting the evil empire of the Soviet Union rather than appeasing it that the tide was turned and the Cold War was ended with the USA victorious.

Clearly, the only way to beat evil is to 1) acknowledge it exists and 2) fight it with all you have rather than giving into it; President Bush, like Reagan and Churchill before him, clearly understands this. However, why is it that we don’t? One would think that after the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, such concepts as the existence of evil and the need to fight it would be self-evident, but they are not. On the contrary, rather than responding to the terrorists who attacked us on September 11th as President Bush is rightly doing, many would rather pretend September 11th never happened and attack the President, justifying their scurrilous remarks in the name of patriotic dissent and the protection of civil liberties. However, notwithstanding my belief in a strict adherence to the Constitution, what good are Constitutional rights if radical Islam takes over the globe and the flag of the crescent replaces the Stars and Stripes in Washington?

In the end, September 11th was a day that had many lessons to offer us, displaying to us the good qualities of self-sacrifice and heroism. The flip side of that that people conveniently forget is that evil exists and seeks our destruction, no matter how much we want to wish it away or ignore it. Further, history shows that the only way to beat it is to fight it. Consequently, we in America are at a crossroads and need to decide which outcome we want: do we want Islamic terrorists to have the last laugh and reduce America and its Constitutional Republic to rubble like it did the World Trade Center on 9/11; if so, don’t change a thing and keep up the venom and attack. On the other hand, do we want to win this war and defeat this new evil empire? If so, we need to shut up, follow the Presidents lead and fight for our country and not against it.
